Flexline Metal Expansion Joints
Single
- Motion: Axial, lateral offset (limited) and angular rotation
- Simplest and least expensive expansion joint. Lack of built-in control devices calls for strict control of adjacent piping. Lateral or angular motion applications may require tie rods to contain pressure thrust.
Universal
- Motion: Lateral offset (large) in any direction
- Least expensive for application. As with the single expansion joint, lack of control devices demands careful anchoring and guidance of connected piping. Suitable for low pressure applications only.
Universal Tied
- Motion: Lateral offset (large) in any direction
- Like the simple (non-tied) Universal expansion joint, the Tied Universal accommodates large lateral offset by virtue of small angular rotations. Tie rods are used to limit center spool motion and contain pressure thrust. This configuration can be used in systems which cannot provide optimum anchoring and guiding.
Pressured Balanced Elbow
- Motion: Axial (plus limited lateral and angular)
- Eliminates pressure thrust and requirement for main anchors. Minimizes guiding requirement. Frequently used at point of connection to equipment which is sensitive to nozzle loading.
Hinged
- Motion: Angular rotation (single plane)
- Maximizes bellows life by closely controlling movement and preventing torsion damage. Hinge structure contains pressure thrust, transmits extraneous loads and supports dead weight. Use of two or three hinged expansion joints separated by pipe spools in a system containing a go to turn can accommodate large pipe excursions in a single plane.
Gimbal
- Motion: Angular rotation (all planes)
- Like the Hinged expansion joint, the Gimbal expansion joint closely controls bellows movement and prevents torsion damage. Gimbal structure contains pressure thrust, transmits extraneous loads, and supports dead weight.
External Pressured
- Motion: Axial (long) only
- Design incorporates alignment guide, internal liner and external cover. Convolutions are self draining, minimizing entrapment of sediment or corrosive residues. Fully-enclosed bellows minimizes danger in the event of bellows failure.
Rectangular
- Motion: Axial, lateral offset (limited) and angular rotation
- Typically used in low pressure ducting. Rectangular shape with deep convolutions provides low spring rates but limits pressure capacity. Available in single or universal configurations, these expansion joints may be fitted with control devices such as rods or hinges to fit individual applications.
